Mislabeling & Labeling Errors Food Recalls

141 total recalls2 currently active

Food mislabeling recalls occur when products have incorrect ingredient lists, wrong nutritional information, missing allergen warnings, or packaging that does not match the product inside. While some labeling errors are cosmetic, others can be dangerous — particularly when the wrong label conceals the presence of allergens.

Frequently Asked Questions

The FDA uses three classification levels. Class I recalls involve situations where there is a reasonable probability that exposure will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Class II recalls involve products that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. Class III recalls involve products that are not likely to cause adverse health consequences.

Do not consume the product. Check the recall notice for specific instructions — most advise you to throw the product away or return it to the store for a refund. If you have already consumed the product and feel ill, contact your healthcare provider and report your symptoms to the FDA via the MedWatch Safety Reporting program.

The duration varies depending on the severity and scope of the recall. Most recalls are resolved within a few weeks to a few months once the affected product is removed from shelves and consumers are notified. Class I recalls involving serious health risks may remain active longer to ensure full product recovery. The FDA monitors each recall until it determines that the firm has taken all necessary corrective actions.
